Accumulation and mobilization of lipids in relation to reproduction of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) in the Western Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Zudaire, Iker; Murua, Hilario; Grande, Maitane; Pernet, Fabrice; Bodin, Nathalie.
Total lipid content and lipid class composition were analyzed in gonads, liver and white muscle of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) throughout ovary development to understand its reproductive allocation strategy and to assess the relation between female condition and reproduction. A total of 112 females were collected onboard purse-seiner in the Western Indian Ocean from January to March 2009, from June to July 2009, and from April to May 2010. Gonads were characterized by highly variable total lipid contents ranging from 5 to 27 μg mg−1 of wet weight (ww) with a predominance of neutral lipids, mainly triacylglycerols (TAG) and sterol- and wax-esters. The different lipid classes in gonads described an accumulative pattern through the maturity process...

Mansur,Cynthia de Barros; Hebling,Nilton José.
The aim of this study was to estimate the fecundity of Dilocarcinus pagei Stimpson, 1861 and Sylviocarcinus australis Magalhães & Turkay, 1996, collected in the Paraguay River, Porto Murtinho County, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, between coordinates 21º42,000'S 57º33,649'W and 21º41,449'S 57º33,770'W, in the period of April 1999 to March 2000. After general collection procedures, the specimens were measured and processed in laboratory conditions. The river water crab species hatch like juveniles and, frequently, female specimens were observed carrying eggs in different stages of development, besides juveniles and eggs at the same time. It was apparent in the frequency distributions that D. pagei has a carapace width average greater than S....

Anatomy, functional morphology, evolutionary ecology and systematics of the invasive gastropod Cipangopaludina japonica (Viviparidae: Bellamyinae) Naturalis
Bocxlaer, B. Van; Strong, E.E..
The anatomy, functional morphology and evolutionary ecology of the Viviparidae, and the subfamily Bellamyinae in particular, are incompletely known. Partly as a result, genealogical relationships within the family remain poorly understood. Because of this lack in knowledge, few informed hypotheses exist on ancestral states, how differences in body plans between the subfamilies evolved, and how the peculiar biogeographic distribution patterns of viviparids have arisen. Here we document the anatomy, morphology, life history and systematics of Cipangopaludina japonica, a Japanese species that has been introduced into North America, to resolve taxonomic confusion and to improve our understanding of how form and function are related in bellamyines. Anatomical...

Applying a non-parametric bootstrap technique to assess the accuracy of biomass estimates of argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) northern stock (34º S-41º S) with the Daily Egg Production Method. 1993-2008 period OceanDocs
Pájaro, M.; Hansen, J.E.; Leonarduzzi, E..
Engraulis anchoita northern stock reproductive biomass (SSB) during the 1993-2008 period was estimated applying the Daily Egg Production Method (DEPM) and accuracy of estimates assessed using a bootstrap technique (SW Atlantic Ocean, Argentine Sea). The basic data were collected in different research surveys carried out in late Spring, at the peak of the spawning season. The aim of this work was to build reliable confidence intervals around the estimates of the mean reproductive biomass applying a non-parametric bootstrap method. Resampling methods are becoming increasingly popular as statistical tools as they are robust and do not require the assumption of any particular distribution of the basic data. This is especially relevant when assessing the DEPM...

Assessment of ecological risk to populations of aquatic invertebrates IBSS Repository
Tsytsugina, V. G..
On the base of experimental data and cytogenetic studies of marine and freshwater invertebrates natural populations it was shown that different species had approximately equal part (%) of full value posterity at the same average level of chromosome mutagenesis for populations, independing on deleterious factors and females fecundity. This phenomenon made it possible to calculate specimens reproductive contribution for species with different females fecundity and to assess expected reduction of population adaptive potential and the increase of ecological risk at different levels of population damage. It is suggested that the adaptation to pollution will be more effective in populations with high female fecundity.

Biología reproductiva del lenguado Paralichthys orbignyanus: Maduración y potencial reproductivo en ejemplares cultivados y salvajes OceanDocs
Radonic, M..
Intensive culture of teleost fish introduces changes over the environmental conditions found in their spawning grounds, leading to reproductive dysfunctions. The manipulation of these parameters (photoperiod, temperature) represents a common technique to alter the reproductive rhythms and enhance the spawnings in terms of quality and quantity. Nevertheless, for each species some modifications or adjustments have to be done according to their reproductive strategies. The advantages of manipulating those parameters are primarily to schedule the spawning for a desired period of time and to obtain good quality and quantity eggs. Many factors such as tank dimension, light intensity, nutritional status and husbandry of broodfish and minimum stress level have...

Bonga shad ( Ethmalosa fimbriata ) spawning tactics in an upwelling environment ArchiMer
Baldé, Bocar Sabaly; Döring, Julian; Ekau, Werner; Diouf, Malick; Brehmer, Patrice.
Successful recruitment in small pelagic fish populations inhabiting upwelling zones is subject to variation in fecundity and is driven by spatial and temporal fluctuations in environmental conditions, that is, mainly sea surface temperature, salinity and food availability. These fluctuations in abiotic factors have stimulated small pelagic fish populations to exhibit specifically adapted spawning tactics. To better understand to what extent a short‐lived exploited fish species such as bonga shad Ethmalosa fimbriata has adapted to an upwelling environment, we have investigated the interrelationship between upwelling intensity as a proxy for productivity and population fecundity by means of a virtual population analysis. We found that females of intermediate...
